San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts
The San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts Sunset was built for the 1915 World's Fair to commemorate the opening of the Panama Canal, which coincided with the re-birth of San Francisco, after the earthquake and fire that devastated it in 1906. Designed by Architect Bernard Maybeck in a classical-influenced style, it is surrounded by statues of "maidens" leaning against its columns, that, according to Maybeck, are "weeping over the loss of Classicism." The very first large framed print of this image was bought by "San Francisco Beautiful," a non profit organization whose only goal is the beautification of San Francisco.
